History

The story of dcb Construction Company, Inc., a locally owned and operated Colorado builder, is one of Colorado history, the struggle for survival, and loyalty to an ethical and professional business philosophy.

1960    Denver Commercial Builders, Inc. (dcb) is chartered in the State of Colorado by a group of local businessmen.

1964    Perry C. Peine purchases the company from the original owners. He dissolves the corporation and changes the company name to Peine Corporation.

1966    Peine changes the company’s name back to Denver Commercial Builders, Inc. He also develops an internal design department that ultimately forms the foundation of what is now known as the "design-build" philosophy. This forward-looking and unique philosophy guides dcb Construction for most of its existence.

1982    Ten dcb employees, including John Barna, enter into a buyout agreement with Peine. Over the next four years, a controlling interest is transferred from Peine to the employee shareholders.

1983    dcb Construction completes a large project for Broadway Moving & Storage, one of company’s original clients. The project gives dcb Construction hope and enthusiasm that it can survive the challenging economic environment of the mid 1980s by diversifying its client base. While dcb does in fact successfully weather the recession, half of all Colorado construction companies disappear by 1990, taking with them more than 55,000 construction jobs.

Over the next three and a half decades, dcb Construction refines and perfects its design-build approach that differentiates it from many of its competitors. The approach resonates with clients, helping the company to complete nearly 2,000 projects in the Rocky Mountain region and across the country for owners, users and developers.

2017    CFO Dan McComb and Board Member Scott King acquire dcb Construction from John Barna as part of an agreement to ensure future success for the company’s clients and employees.
