Management

John R. Barna, Jr., Principal
President

Mr. Barna joined dcb Construction Company, Inc., in May 1977 as a Project Manager. On January 15, 1982 he was one of ten dcb employees who entered into a leveraged buyout agreement with the company's founder and owner, Mr. Perry Peine. What transpired next set the tone for the remainder of Mr. Barna’s remarkable twenty-eight year tenure at dcb. On May 2, 1982, Colorado's infamous "Black Sunday" hit the Western Slope when Exxon retreated from the development of shale oil, causing a collapse of the entire market.

In business for just a few short months, the owners of dcb found themselves in a very precarious position. With little to no work and enormous note payments, their survival instincts accelerated at a rapid pace. Their relentless persistence proved profitable. January 1983 brought the completion of a building for Broadway Moving & Storage, one of dcb's first clients. With high hopes and much enthusiasm, owners and employees never looked back. The company began concentrating on design-build projects and, with slow and steady leadership, built dcb into one of the premiere design-build firms in the state of Colorado. Mr. Barna's core belief of working together is at the heart of the design-build philosophy and method of construction. And now the entire construction industry is catching onto this philosophy. dcb Construction Company, Inc., with Mr. Barna at the helm continues to be a pioneer of design-build construction.

"As a business owner you need to decide either to be very large or very specialized. We decided from day one to specialize in design-build, allowing us to provide value and trust to every client we've ever served. It's a simple business philosophy that works for us."

John Barna, Jr.

This philosophy of better serving the client's interests with designer and contractor working together has garnered tremendous success for this small construction company that could. dcb Construction Company, Inc. is currently celebrating it's 46th year in business, generating over $30 million in revenue annually.

Mr. Barna, now one of four principal owners, has seen a tremendous amount of change in Colorado over the past 46 years. From 1986 to 1988, over 55,000 construction jobs were lost and by 1990 more than half of all the construction companies didn't survive the turbulent 1980's. But dcb held fast to its fundamental belief of doing one thing exceptionally well and rode out the 1980's to ultimate success.

Mr. Barna's legacy of honesty and integrity is now being passed on to an entire new generation of dcb leaders. Knowing that his reputation is unsurpassed within the construction industry, these new leaders work tirelessly to continue his passion.

A native of Nebraska, Mr. Barna graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, specializing in Structural Engineering and migrated to Colorado shortly after graduation.

He has been active in many Chambers and economic development organizations including the Denver, Aurora, Ft. Collins and Colorado Springs Chambers of Commerce as well as a variety of charity organizations including Mile High United Way, Special Olympics, Alameda West Kiwanis Club and the Boy Scouts of America. He has served as a Board member of the American Arbitration Association for the past three years and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Colorado Springs National Bank and the Board of Advisors of City Wide Banks. Mr. Barna also served as National President of the Systems Builders Association from 1990 to 1991 and as National President of the Building Systems Institute in 1990.

Mr. Barna lives in Lakewood with his wife and daughter.

"There is a misconception of business ownership. It's not about being your own boss, it's about having the heart to stick with a company long-term and to have it be the focal point of your life. It's simply a state of mind and an attitude of pure passion and a love for what you do."

John Barna, Jr.
